Color: Dark brown to black
Distribution: Common in eastern parts of the U.S., but probably occurs in every state.
Swarming: Late spring to early fall.
Nests: Exposed or covered soil, rotten wood, woodwork or masonry of houses.
Food: Dead or live insects, honeydew, sweets, meats, bread, grease, oils, vegetables and fruits.
Comments Colonies very large with many queens. Does no structural damage when nesting indoors.
