In exposed soil, under stones, in logs, hollow plant stems, stumps, dead trees and telephone poles. Also in decayed or unsound wood in buildings. Constructs galleries similar to carpenter ants. |

Other insects, including winged termites. Attend aphids for honeydew. Prefer sweets and meats or food with high protein content. |
| Comments |
Colonies large. Workers may appear at times to be slow-moving. Hold heart-shaped gaster over body when disturbed. Often builds shelters of plant or earthen materials over aphids which it tends for honeydew. |
